Chiptune Academy Open Mic Mama Chens, Footscray
Dot.AY is the bass heavy gameboy music project of Alex Yabsley, focusing on making these gaming artifacts sound as little like themselves as possible. Based in Naarm / Melbourne this pursuit has had him playing shows locally and around the world for the last decade — in 2019 playing a warehouse in Milan and a small underground bar in Tampere, Finland. Shaking off the last few years he's looking forward to making a few speakers rumble again.

Alex as a DJ is interested in the multitude of dance music styles from around the globe. This means he has covered a wide range of bases including DJing for Synthwave night Laser Highway through to supporting Om Unit and others as part of footwork duo B.O.O.M.A. On top of this he is a trained radio DJ previously appearing on Triple R, electronic music subgenre based podcast Genre Cult and a stint on internet radio station Datafruits. During lockdowns and the pandemic, Alex became interested in deep listening and field recording as a mindfulness practice. These recordings are shared here and combined in one art project where field recording and on-location DJ sets collide.
Following the same aesthetic as chiptune for music, Alex's foray into the creation of visuals and live motion graphics (VJing) comes from the use of archaic and obsolete hardware. Namely an old video mixer — but adding video synths, homemade tools and videogame consoles to create a glitchy, colourful punk aesthetic. Music videos, live streams, a takeover of Rooftop Bar in Melbourne and a bunch of live shows. COMMISSIONS OPEN
Alex has been part of running some of Australia's biggest Chiptune / Retrotech music events in Australia, collaborating with ACMI, PAX, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Changes Music Conference and more. Currently that includes being part of the Melbourne Chiptune Academy bi-monthly open mics and the upcoming Interrupt Festival. Past highlights include a decade of Square Sounds Festival.
